Where's your happy place? Choosing the right location for your family photography session—and there are so many in the DMV—is one of the first steps in creating timeless and cherished memories. The backdrop sets the tone for your photos, enhancing the visual narrative and capturing the essence of your family's unique story. Here's a comprehensive guide to help you choose the ideal location that aligns with your vision for the perfect family portraits.

What to Consider

Your Story: I always ask my families, "What's your perfect Saturday?" That simple question can help us narrow down the many options—whether it's a serene park, a vibrant urban setting, or the cozy familiarity of your own home. It's important to choose a location that resonates with your family's character and preferences.

The Seasons: Think about the time of year and how it might influence your choice of location. A blooming garden in spring, a sunlit beach in summer, or the warm hues of a forest in autumn can add a seasonal touch to your photos.

Lots of backdrops: Choose a location that offers a variety of backgrounds within close proximity. This allows for diverse shots during the session, providing you with a well-rounded collection of family portraits.

Comfort/accessibility is key: Make sure the location is comfortable for all family members, especially children and pets. A relaxed and familiar setting will result in more natural and joyful expressions, creating a stress-free environment for everyone. Also, consider the ease of accessibility for all family members, especially if you have young children or individuals with mobility considerations. A location that is easily accessible will ensure a smoother and more enjoyable experience for everyone.

Considering permits: Shooting in a public or private space sometimes requires a permit, which must be acquired in advance. You might want to keep that in mind when selecting a location, so that you have enough time to submit the request and know if you'll be adding to your session fee.

Finding Your Spot

I'll share with you some of my favorite locations, taking into account how I approach lifestyle and storytelling photography. I look at the possibilities for unique compositions, lighting, and overall aesthetic appeal.

  1. The great outdoors: This setting is comfortable for all families—whether you spend a lot of time in nature or are just starting to explore with your littles, we'll choose a garden or a park where we can play and capture beautiful moments. Ideal timing for this location is early mornings or golden hour (exact hours change with the season). Locations to consider: McCrillis Gardens (Bethesda), Brookside Gardens (Wheaton), Agricultural History Farm Park (Derwood), Woodend Sanctuary (Chevy Chase), Clum-Kennedy Park (Kensington), Lubber Run (Arlington), Fort CF Smith (Arlington), Greenspring Gardens (Alexandria), and more.
  2. A city scene. Looking for a fresh take on family photos? The textures and patterns of some local downtowns might be just the vibe you're looking for. From wall murals and street art to the reflections in shop windows, your family photos will surely become works of art. Ideal timing for this location is early morning, before other people are around. Locations to consider: Pike & Rose (North Bethesda), Bethesda Row, Antique Row (Kensington), Rio Lakefront (Gaithersburg), Mosaic District (Fairfax).
  3. In your home. You won't have to go too far for a more intimate option. Your home—where so many memories happen on the daily—is a great location. (And forget the notion that your house is too messy!) With shadows and unexpected compositions, I'll capture your family in the place you know and love. Ideal timing depends on your home's natural light, but read more about why I love in-home winter sessions.
