When a newborn session inquiry comes to my inbox, I can't help but smile. It means the world to me that new parents ask me to document the earliest days with their new babies—such an intimate and beautiful time for families. Whether it's your first, second, or third child, I'm here to help you every baby step of the way. Let's document the details you don't want to forget.

Newborn photos (typically before 10-14 days) can be done whenever the family is ready. Older babies might not sleep as much and may have some baby acne, but there may be more expressions to capture. While my posing doesn't include baskets, buckets, or elaborate setups, I love showing every detail from hair to toes.

As you prepare for your in-home newborn photography session, I want to share with you what to expect and how to prepare.

What to Expect

Get cozy: The cozy and familiar atmosphere of your home allows for a relaxed and intimate session, ensuring your baby feels just as comfortable as you. Gentle and natural poses allow your baby to remain content and serene throughout the session. Crank up the heat and warm up the place. Feel free to play soft music for a calming vibe for the whole family.

Go with the flow: Newborns operate on their unique schedules. In-home sessions are designed with flexibility in mind, accommodating breaks for feeding, cuddling, and any other needs your baby may have. If baby is happy when I arrive, we'll start with newborn portraits and then move on to sibling photos (let's talk about your comfort level with young older siblings) and family photos.

See the light: We'll use natural light from windows. Soft, diffused sunlight enhances the warmth of your photos and captures your newborn's features.

How to Prepare

  1. Look for light: When you book your session, I'd love to hear about the rooms in your house with the most natural light. Oftentimes, the nursery or the parents' bedroom provide the perfect backdrop. (When I arrive at your house, big brothers/sisters often like to give me a house tour, and we can scout for light, too.)
  2. Keep tidy: Clutter-free spaces can help ensure the focus remains on your baby. A clean, simple background allows the beauty of the moment to shine through. But also know that a mess can easily fall into the shadows of the frame, and you shouldn't feel stressed to have the place ready for a house showing.
  3. Plan your outfits: Parents should dress in comfortable and simple clothing to keep the focus on the baby. For in-home sessions, I love the look of white and neutral color clothing. Younger siblings might want to pick out their own clothes. Make sure to have at least two simple and well-fitting outfits for baby.
  4. Don't forget the snacks: I recommend feeding your baby before our session (and I'm happy to photograph nursing moms—just let me know). For older siblings, feel free to have non-sticky snacks available.
  5. What to have on hand: Please have wipes, swaddle blankets, a plain diaper cover (swaddle can also cover diaper lines), and a pacifier (if your baby is using one). While I don't typically bring props such as baskets, I am happy to help you style your baby with any props you have at the house. I do have a letter board for announcing name, date of birth, and any other details.
  6. Create special moments: Bring out items that hold sentimental value—blankets, toys, or clothing. These personal touches add depth to your photos and make them uniquely yours.
  7. Sit back and relax: Embrace the experience and let the session unfold naturally. These moments are fleeting, and the session is designed to be a celebration of your family's love and connection.

In this in-home newborn and family session, we'll partner to capture the essence of your unique journey. I look forward to creating lasting memories with you.
