Our pets hold a special place in our hearts, and what better way to capture the essence of family life than by including these furry family members in your photoshoot? Whether you have a lovable Labrador, a playful kitty, or a charming hamster, incorporating pets in family photos can add an extra layer of warmth and authenticity. After including pets in about half of my sessions every year, I've got some tips and considerations to ensure a paw-sitively perfect session that captures the love and joy between your family and your beloved pets.

1. Talk to me.

Before our session, let your photographer know about your intention to include pets. This allows them to plan accordingly, adjust their approach, and suggest suitable locations or settings for the session.

2. Choose a Pet-Friendly Location.

Not all locations are pet-friendly, so make sure we pick one that not only welcomes pets but also makes it comfortable for everyone involved. Whether it's a pet-friendly park, a beach, or your own backyard, selecting a familiar and safe environment will help your pets feel at ease and allow for more natural interactions.

3. Timing is Key.

Just like it's important to consider good timing for kids, consider your pet's schedule when planning the photo session. Is there a time when your pet is typically more relaxed and well-rested? That can contribute to a smoother and more enjoyable session.

4. Bring Treats and Toys.

Keep your pet engaged and cooperative by bringing their favorite treats or toys. These can be used as rewards for good behavior and to capture playful moments during the session.

6. Capture Candid Interactions.

The magic of including pets in family photos lies in capturing candid interactions: natural play, cuddles, and genuine moments. These authentic shots will showcase the unique bonds.

7. Have a Helper on Standby.

If possible, bring a family member or friend to assist with managing the pets during the session. Having an extra set of hands can be invaluable, ensuring that both your pets and family members are comfortable and relaxed.

8. Patience is a Virtue.

Pets can be unpredictable, and that's part of what makes them so endearing. Be patient and allow your photographer to take the time needed to capture the perfect shots. A relaxed atmosphere will contribute to a more successful session.

9. Coordinate Outfits with Your Pets.

For a visually cohesive look, consider coordinating outfits with your pets. This doesn't mean exact matches, but complementary colors or accessories can tie everyone together.

10. Safety First.

Prioritize the safety and well-being of your pets. Ensure that any location chosen for the photoshoot is pet-safe, and avoid poses or situations that might stress or endanger your furry friends.

Incorporating pets in family photos adds an extra layer of love and joy to your visual storytelling. By following these tips and considerations, you can ensure a seamless and heartwarming session. From playful antics to tender moments, these images will serve as cherished memories of the unconditional love that defines your family. Get ready for a photoshoot filled with wagging tails, purrs, and sweet moments!
