I've found that your photos look best when families are styled in a natural way. Think: coordinated, not matching. This will allow each family member's personality to shine through.

Be Comfortable and Coordinated

First, identify your location. That can help inform what colors and style you choose. Then, don't wait too long to start planning. You'll need time to look in your closet and see what you already have and also maybe order a few new pieces.

Choose a color palette. Some of my favorite color combinations are: denim and tan; brown and maroon; navy, tan, and cream; and purple and mustard. You can also turn to the color wheel and consider complementary colors (across from each other) or analogous colors (next to each other). For extended families, consider neutrals with a pop of color (typically on the person such as matriarch who you might want to highlight).

For a timeliness look, avoid patterns and logos/characters. This ensures that when you look back on your photos, they won't feel dated. Consider clothing items that can add movement (long dresses and skirts). And texture (knit sweaters, lace, lightweight scarves, etc.) can really look nice in detail shots and add visual interest. Layers (cardigans, shawls, light jackets, etc.) can also add dimension to your photos.

For in-home newborn sessions, prioritize comfort. Choosing clothing you feel relaxed in will reflect that feeling in the photos. As for color, think about the colors in your home's décor; be sure to choose colors that complement your home. I recommend whites and neutrals (creams, grays, pastels, earth tones) to keep the focus on baby. Let older siblings choose what they want to wear. And have two well-fitting outfits on hand for baby. Consider onesies, swaddles, or even just a diaper/diaper cover.

Don't forget accessories! Hats, bows, and scarves are great for styling, or little kid purses or sunglasses can be fun to play with and help tell your family's story.
